DENTAL BONDING

For teeth that are decayed, chipped, fractured, or discolored, dental bonding is a simple yet effective solution. Dental bonding is made from a tooth-colored resin material and bonds to an existing tooth. Little to no preparation is needed for the tooth, meaning that it does not get altered like it would if it were to receive a veneer.

Normally, just one office visit is enough to complete the procedure. Because it’s non-invasive and not much—if any—enamel must be removed from the teeth, anesthesia usually is not required (unless a tooth needs to be filled, drilled, or the area to be treated is near a nerve). The procedure begins, like with veneers, with choosing the composite resin color that most closely matches the natural tooth color. The surface of the tooth is slightly roughened, and a conditioning liquid is applied to help the bonding material stick to the tooth. The resin is applied, molded, and smoothed into the desired shape. A bright light or laser is then shone onto the tooth to harden the material. The last step of dental bonding, is to trim, shape, and polish the newly-hardened dental bond. The entire procedure takes about 30-60 minutes to complete.

It should be noted that composite resin is not as strong as natural teeth. They are not as durable as veneers and crowns and may need to be retouched or replaced over time. They also stain more easily than veneers and require diligent cleaning to maximize their durability, but can last over ten years.
