In the past, amalgam (silver) fillings were fairly often used. At Spring Creek Forest Dental, we use composite fillings, which are typically made of powdered glass and acrylic resin and are good for treating small to mid-size cavities. Unlike amalgam fillings and silver fillings, our dental fillings contain no toxic ingredients. Though they may need to be replaced more often than amalgam fillings, composite fillings provide good durability and can withstand moderate pressure from the constant stress of chewing. The main advantage of composite fillings is that they can be shaded to match the existing teeth, making them less visible and creating a more natural-looking smile.
To place a filling in a tooth, the decay must first be removed, and the affected area cleaned. The cleaned area will then be filled with the composite resin material. This closes off spaces where bacteria can enter, thus preventing further decay.
Of course, the best filling is no filling. Proper oral hygiene habits, namely daily brushing and flossing, will help to keep cavities away and therefore the need for a filling.
